Viewer Access Satellite Television (VAST)

Under the Broadcasting Service Act 1992, television viewers who do not have adequate reception of one or more terrestrial digital commercial television broadcasting services should be able to access satellite television services via the VAST service. Access to the VAST service is made available progressively around Australia in line with the switchover timetable.

The Broadcasting Services Act 1992 establishes the principles through which access to VAST must be determined. In accordance with this legislation, two separate schemes for the areas of eastern and western VAST have been registered with the Australian Communications and Media Authority (the ACMA). The Eastern VAST service operates in South Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania.

Eligibility Requirements; The VAST service is available in areas of regional Australia that have already switched to digital-only TV, where viewers are unable to obtain adequate reception of the terrestrial digital television services that operate in those areas. Viewers in other areas that have not yet switched to digital-only TV will have access to the VAST service about six (6) months before the switch to digital TV in their area.

In eastern Australia the VAST service is also available to viewers who currently rely on the Remote Area Broadcasting Service, also known as Aurora. Viewers who are currently receiving their TV services from the existing Aurora satellite platform can apply for the VAST service now.

 

Who can have VAST?

  • VAST is available for anyone, however there are limitation as to how many channels are available to individual applicants
  • Only those deemed eligible for VAST are able to receive all of the commercial channels that are commonly available via a terrestrial antenna system
  • Eligibility to commercial channels is limited to those who live in areas which are unable to receive satisfactory reception via an antenna
  • Eligibility usually takes approx. 1 day
  • A complete VAST channel compliment is available for people who are traveling – limited to a six month period
  • Unless you qualify for a subsidy, all equipment and installation costs must be borne by the applicant

Getting VAST services

  • Once you have determined if you want to use the VAST service, and you are fully aware of the channel lineup you will be eligible to receive, you will need to establish a relationship with a VAST satellite installation contractor (such as Wide area communications)
  • The next step will be to have the antenna dish and cabling work carried out if you are a resident, or purchase the Travelers Kit if you are mobile.
  • Once the satellite dish is installed, you will be given your Set Top Box .
  • Plug in the STB to your wall plate outlet
  • Using the AV cabling supplied, plug the STB into your television and select the appropriate input (e.g. HDMI1)
  • If your Satellite installation is aligned and cabled correctly you should receive two (2) VAST info channels (channel 800 and 802) and an Optus test signal channel (channel 801). These channels will work regardless of your Smartcard status (ie. Installed, not installed, activated, not activated)
  • If your Smartcard has been activated as a basic subcription, you will be able to receive all ABC and SBS broadcasts
  • If your Smartcard has been activated as a full subscription and you are eligible for all commercial stations, you will be able to receive all commercial channels
  • The VAST set top box is able to produce output resolutions of 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i. The correct resolution should be selected according to your TV to produce the best picture quality possible. Note; The broadcasters content seems to be limited to ~576i.
